Easton Press Information
The Easton Press has been publishing fine quality leatherbound books for almost 30 years, using 22kt gold stamping on the covers, fine endpapers and sewn-in satin bookmarks. Although they offer a few series, most of their books are far-ranging in interest and topic, much more diversified than Franklin Library was. Many of their older books have increased tremendously in value, while others languish at about half the original price.
Most of their series books tend to hold or increase in value, especially the two signed first edition series - Signed First Editions and Signed First Editions of Science Fiction, which are issued in limited numbers, usually between 1,000 and 1,500 each. Their Signed Modern Classics series also has some gems in it, although Easton tends to reprint many of these, if the authors are still alive and willing to sign more pages and Certificates of Authenticity (COA), to accommodate new subscribers, often resulting in differing dates on the copyright pages and COAs, as well as watering down the market by increasing the supply.
Another series of note is the Masterpieces of Science Fiction, which includes about one signed book for every 10 unsigned ones. While containing some very nice titles, this series is a mish-mash in that titles are often removed from the series and others substituted, including the signed titles (my list below is simply the latest version, subject to change). Nevertheless, the signed titles do very well on the secondary market and even the unsigned ones are in demand, if in Fine condition.
The Library of the Presidents, another popular series, is now down to only three signed titles (Presidents Carter, Ford and Bush), making the previous signed offerings by Nixon and Reagan even more valuable. The unsigned editions do not tend to do well by themselves, but a complete collection commands a good price.
Finally, a word on the non-series signed books, which are available to the general public without a subscription. Many of these were formerly part of the Signed First Edition series and have been reissued as "Signed Collector's Editions," again depending upon the author's ability and willingness to sign new pages and (sometimes) COAs. Needless to say, the collector's edition is not as valuable as the original signed first edition, but still in demand, as are others which are first-time releases by Easton.
There are also a few unsigned series similar to the Franklin Library unsigned series (see below) and, like the Franklins, mostly sell below retail on the secondary market, but tend to hold that (reduced) value.
A Note to (Potential) Easton Subscribers
Since most of the major Easton series are available by subscription only, there is an active market for single books from the various series, even though some of them are still available directly from Easton. For those wanting a collection, rather than just a few individual books, Easton offers a program requiring only a small effort on your part. First of all, Easton offers a no-questions-asked 30-day return policy at their expense (you have to contact them and they'll send you a postage-page return sticker).
Second, and not so well known, you can request a listing of available titles in the series and send it back to them with titles you do not want marked. They will not send you those titles, saving you the trouble of returning an unwanted book. If you change your mind, you can request the formerly unwanted title and, if you decide you don't want a book you did receive, you can take advantage of the return policy. A no-lose situation for the collector!
Non-Easton Eastons?
This was brought to my attention by a couple of fellow booksellers. Apparently, Easton issued some books which were not printed by them. They bought the actual publisher's textblock and bound it in the famous Easton leather, putting the stylized "e/p" logo on the bottom of the spine; however, there is no reference to Easton on the title or copyright pages. An example of this is the Abrams' re-issue of Monet in 1989. Thanks to satnrose and psthomas (eBay usernames) for this information. I'd appreciate any other examples to add to this list.
