The Last Leaf by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Houghton-Mifflin & Co., The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1866 [copyright and signed 1985], 54 pages (numbered and printed on one side of the page only). #35 of 100 signed limited editions. Folio - about 15" x 11.75" weighing 6 pounds. Bound in quarter parchment vellum and richly gilt paper over boards with gilt lettering to front and gilt top edges. The book includes the author's, publisher's and artists' signatures, a facsimile of the poem in the author's hand, the poem written out (in another hand) with illustrations, and "The History of this Poem" - a three page statement by Holmes dated July 9th, 1885. Illustrated throughout with a frontispiece portrait, vignettes to all text pages (a few printed in red and black), and in the main section each line or phrase of the poem surrounded by an illustration facing a page with a mounted illustration printed on Japanese paper - a lavish production. Each leaf is attached by a cloth hinge to a half-inch stub (with the stubs gathered and sewn) to allow the large pages to lay well as the pages are turned. The phototype illustrations were printed by The Lewis Co. The top part of the spine covering is split along the front (about 3") and rear (about 1") boards, with some chipping to the head and tail and a 1/2" tear across the spine from the front board about 2" from the top. All four corners have wear through the covering material and the fore edges and bottom of the boards have medium shelfwear, with a few small chips extending into the boards. Most of the pages are lightly foxed. The binding is still tight with all leaves and covers firmly attached. All-in-all, in very collectible condition. Only two other examples of this book have been found, one in the Harvard Library, and another, a binding copy in poor condition, found online. The last recorded auction of the book was over 30 years ago. As speculation, because the hinged leaves lend themselves to being easily removed, several copies may have been dismantled and others simply fallen apart.
